Pod-based coffee machines are proving ever more popular, and there are two contenders for the top spot in the marketplace. One is the Tassimo, from German producers Bosch and the other is the Pixie, by Nespresso. If you decide that a pod-based machine is for you, which do you select?

The technology behind these machines needs to be put in context. In a standard espresso maker, you put ground coffee beans in a holder, tamp them down firmly (a skill in itself) and insert the holder in the machine. Heated water is pumped through the grounds, giving you a cup of espresso from the outlet. There's no holder to empty and clean and no coffee to wash out of the pipes - only water. Any other benefits?

* The pods are bar-coded, which the machine reads to give you the ideal brew.

* A good-size water reservoir - 1.5 or 1.7 litre depending on the model

* Really compact in size - so little room needed on the countertop

* It can make real espresso coffee - the Tassimo makes use of additives to get a crema

* Cool modern style



* The operation is extremely easy

* Use of high-quality materials in construction
